Google Ads Quality Score: checking ads, queries and landing pages

Use the three Quality Score components to diagnose query intent, ads, mobile landing pages and suitable enquiry costs without a fixed CPC discount.

Google Ads Quality Score: checking ads, queries and landing pages

TL;DR: Google Ads Quality Score helps diagnose a weak link in Search advertising: expected click-through rate, ad relevance or landing page experience. The visible score is not an input in the auction and does not guarantee a CPC reduction. Use it alongside spending, lead quality and sales to choose a useful correction.

Clicks become more expensive and enquiries arrive, yet few become customers. Changing bids may seem the obvious answer. First check what people searched for, what the ad promised and where the link took them. A cheaper click to the wrong offer does not solve the business problem.

Canem Errant reviews the chain query → ad → landing page → enquiry → CRM. We can check the structure, message and page behavior. A higher diagnostic rating is supporting information; suitable customers and their acquisition cost decide whether the change helped.

What is Quality Score, and how do you read its components?

Quality Score, or QS, is a 1–10 diagnostic rating at Search keyword level. Its three components are Expected CTR, Ad relevance and Landing page experience. Each receives an above-average, average or below-average status compared with advertisers appearing for the same exact search over the previous 90 days. Google’s QS definition.

The visible historical score is not the auction input. Google evaluates ad quality and other conditions for a particular auction. The keyword column identifies an area to investigate; doubling QS does not create a fixed price discount.

Do not average the scores into a business target. A keyword rated 6 that attracts profitable customers can be more useful than one rated 9 that brings students. A dash can indicate insufficient suitable searches for a score, rather than zero quality. Review the current and historical columns before concluding that a rating changed.

Why is a QS-to-CPC discount table misleading?

There is no fixed reduction for QS 7, 8 or 10. Competition, bids, queries and auction conditions affect CPC. A lower CPC after an edit does not isolate the effect of a new visible score.

Use a diagnostic table instead of predicting the price of a click:

SignalCheck and business measure
Expected CTR below averageCheck relevant messages, distinct arguments and query intent; compare clicks with cost per suitable enquiry.
Ad relevance below averageCheck whether unrelated services share one group; compare useful query coverage and lead quality.
Landing page experience below averageCheck the promised service, mobile usability and the enquiry path; measure successful contact and errors.
QS improves but sales do notCheck traffic mix, conversion goals and CRM follow-up; measure qualified enquiries and sales cost.

Save the period, spend, clicks, enquiries and qualification rules. Allow for seasonality and delayed decisions: today’s click may become a contract later. Google’s advice on using QS treats it as a diagnostic aid rather than an outcome to optimize for its own sake.

How can you improve the message before the click?

Expected CTR is an estimate, not the same number as the CTR of one recent report. Start with a useful answer to the query. Someone seeking office IT support needs the scope and contact conditions, rather than “innovative business solutions”.

Responsive Search Ads accept up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Use different arguments: the task solved, intended customer, included work and next action. Repeating one sentence does not create variety. Google’s RSA documentation.

Pinning restricts combinations. It can help when essential wording must appear, such as a condition that cannot be omitted. Pinning a favorite headline first in every ad is not a universal CTR strategy. Check that alternative combinations remain accurate and readable.

Sitelinks, callouts and other assets should support the offer and lead to working destinations. State prices, quantities and dates only when the business can substantiate them. A precise limitation can attract fewer clicks but better buyers. Review the complete offer, not just the space an ad occupies. RSA creation practices.

How do you connect queries, ad groups and the offer?

Organize related purchase intentions. Cloud migration and office support may belong to one business but need different explanations and landing pages. The appropriate number of keywords depends on whether one coherent ad can answer them, not a fixed quota or a declaration that every single-keyword group is obsolete.

Read actual search terms. Identify jobs, training, free material or services the company does not offer. Add negative keywords for demonstrated irrelevance. Broad exclusions applied without checking can also remove buyers.

Dynamic Keyword Insertion inserts the ad-group keyword that triggered the ad, not necessarily the user’s literal search term. Review grammar, length, trademarks and fallback wording, including a pattern such as {KeyWord:IT Support}. It cannot repair a group with incompatible intentions. Keyword insertion explained.

Judge the effect through customers. Fewer forms with more suitable companies may be useful. If enquiries disappear altogether, check restrictions and the form before narrowing reach again. The principle of one defined comparison also applies in our creative testing guide.

What should you check on the landing page?

The first screen should continue the ad: the same service, understandable conditions and a clear contact action. A specific IT query should not lead to a general catalogue where the visitor must start choosing again.

Open the page on a phone. Check text, button, fields, error messages and confirmation. The visitor should understand who receives their data and what follows the enquiry. Landing page review combines these details with the offer and conversion path.

Use PageSpeed Insights and available field data to identify a real problem: a heavy image, blocking script, layout shift or slow main content. Fix the identified cause and check again. A single mobile score or a three-second threshold is not a documented automatic QS classification. A fast page with the wrong promise can still fail customers.

How can you evaluate changes in an IT-services example?

Consider an IT company with expensive clicks and mixed-quality enquiries. This is a teaching scenario, not a published client result. Six useful actions are:

  1. Separate query intentions by service and buying task.
  2. Rewrite ads for those tasks and review their combinations.
  3. Decide whether keyword insertion helps and test its wording.
  4. Align destinations with ads and check the forms.
  5. Fix confirmed mobile loading problems.
  6. Exclude irrelevant queries and compare the quality of new enquiries.

If all six change together, do not attribute the result to QS alone. Record the work, dates and comparison conditions, including changes in budget or demand.

For a €2,000 budget, an actual average CPC of €4 corresponds to 500 clicks. At €3, the same spend corresponds to about 667. This is arithmetic at constant spend, not a predicted result of changing a score. More clicks only help if enough become suitable customers. See our CPA review for the wider acquisition question.

Does this Quality Score apply to Performance Max?

PMax does not display this keyword-level QS column. It can still serve on Search inventory, so the absent column does not mean ads avoid search auctions or quality requirements.

Review PMax goals, assets, destinations and results using the campaign’s reports. Do not substitute an asset-strength label for Search QS or for profitability. Our Performance Max guide explains the preparation and controls.

What should you check this week?

Add QS, its three components and historical columns to the keyword report. Start with meaningful spend and an actual service, rather than the lowest number on a nearly unused keyword.

Save the queries, ad and page for one selected group. Define one testable hypothesis, an owner and the result metric. Agree with sales what counts as a qualified enquiry. You can then discuss a concrete correction rather than chase a more attractive dashboard score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Quality Score?

A higher score can indicate a more useful ad and page relative to the compared searches. There is no universal business requirement to reach 7. Investigate a weak component and compare its importance with spending and sales.

How quickly does the visible score update?

The diagnosis uses historical data. Review current and historical columns without expecting a guaranteed update within 24–72 hours. With few suitable exact searches, a rating may be absent.

Should I improve QS in Performance Max?

PMax has no Search keyword-level QS column. Use campaign reporting, accurate goals, asset review and enquiry quality. The Search metric does not transfer to PMax.

How many weeks until results improve?

It depends on traffic, purchase cycle and the change. A repaired form can be checked immediately; acquisition economics need matured enquiries. The same deadline and CPC reduction cannot be promised across accounts.

Is this worthwhile with a small budget?

Yes, if the review finds a concrete loss such as an irrelevant query, misleading offer or broken form. Start with one spending group. Many simultaneous changes make the result harder to interpret.

How can you start a Search review?

Bring the costly query group, offer and available conversion data. Discuss a Google Ads review →; we first establish the task and scope. Tracking guidance can support reliable measurement without setting a promised CPC reduction.

Where do marketing numbers and reality stop matching?

Describe what your advertising reports, what happens after an inquiry and what result you expected.

If the query, ad and landing page do not match, we review that connection in Google Ads. The evaluation uses confirmed business conversions, rather than Quality Score alone.
